UKHospitality's annual conference returns on September 20

Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng has been announced as the headline speaker, joining a lineup that includes Paul Pomroy, CEO of McDonalds UK, Karin Shepard, European MD of InterContinental Hotels Group, and Nick Mackenzie, CEO of Greene King. The RAC Club in London will host the 2021 UKHospitality Conference on September 20th.

Hotel bosses give staff a month off and bonus after busy summer

During the summer months, the St Moritz Hotel in South West England has been running at 98% occupancy. As a thank you, employees will get a bonus at the end of October and a 5% pay rise. It has also been revealed that they would be given a month off with the hotel closing in November for renovations.

Microsoft invests $5 million in Oyo

According to a regulatory filing, Microsoft has invested $5 million in Airbnb-backed Oyo. The new investment values the Indian hotel chain at $9.6 billion ahead of its proposed IPO.

  • Hospitality customers returning at faster rate than last summer — According to new data, the number of consumers who visited a hospitality venue in the first 10 days following July's 'Freedom Day' was almost double the number who returned after the lockdown was lifted last summer. This comes as UKHospitality encouraged customers to treat staff with respect, with some hospitality workers saying frustrated customers have left them demoralised and upset.
  • IHG's Maalouf: Fundamentals of travel have not changed — Elie Maalouf, CEO of the Americas at IHG said: “The fundamentals of growth in [gross domestic product] around the world, the growth in population, the growth in household income — that eventually leads people to want to explore and to travel for leisure, and leads businesses to want to explore and travel to expand their businesses, domestically and globally.”
  • New East London hotel The Gantry will open in November — The 291-bedroom independent hotel, which will open in Stratford a year later than planned, will have a food market, restaurant and deli, as well as a rooftop bar (opening in spring 2022).

  • Exceptional hotel performance amid a downturn — According to STR's analysis of US hotels, a handful of hotels were able to achieve full RevPAR growth and true occupancy growth during the pandemic. The hotels that did exceptionally well were smaller economy and midscale properties in small areas.
